Scouting Report

   1997-98 Season
Second on team in goals with career high. Second on team in shots. Third on team in shooting percentage.

   The Finesse Game
Perreault's speed is marginal for the NHL level. He tries to compensate with his intelligence, and at least on
the Kings' current roster that is significant enough to earn him ice time as a number two centre. He is nifty and
shifty in tight quarters, but lacks breakaway speed. Perreault has very good hands and always has his head
up, looking for openings. While he doesn't have open-ice speed, he works hard to put on a quick burst in the
offensive zone to gain a half-step on a defender. Once he is open for the shot, he waits for the goalie to
commit, or he makes a patient pass. Tricky and solid on his feet, Perreault works the half-boards on the
power play. He has an accurate shot with a quick release, and slithers around to get in the best position for
   the shot.

   The Physical Game
Perreault lacks the size for one-on-one battles in the attacking zone. Defensively, he can't do much except
harass a puck carrier with his stick. He is an in-betweener, and if forced to carry the play in any zone, his
   flaws become apparent.

   The Intangibles
It's easy to write off Perreault. It has been done many times over the past few seasons, but he keeps coming
into the Kings training camp and earning a job. Unless L.A. upgrades the position during the off-season, there
will still be an opening for Perreault--if he still has the desire to win it. Perreault found it a little harder when
people started expecting him to score instead of regarding him as a lovely surprise, and he had a slow second
half (only nine goals after the All-Star break).

   Projection
Perreault's goal total is a testament to how hard he has worked to make himself an NHL player. He has no
right scoring 25 goals at this level, but he will probably do it again.
