The Game

After 6 minutes and 5 seconds of playing the first period of the the first game, Captain Mats Sundin put some offense to their penalty kill!  As a Montreal defenceman, standing at the blue line, received the puck, Mats came skating by and, with his stick, stole control of the puck.  Putting his legs in gear, he speeded his way towards goal tender Jeff Hackett.  Hackett stood prepared but the Toronto Captain beat him with a nifty little back hander!

The second goal of the game wasn't scored until 17:13 of the second.  It was a nice goal to start off, left winger, Jonas Hoglund's career as a Maple Leaf! Steve Thomas stood behind the net and made a pass to Sundin who took a shot.  Hackett was quick and saved it, but unfortunately for him Hoglund stood only a few feet away from Sundin, got the rebound and put it in.

Also in the second period, Leaf's Bryan Berard got into a fight, which got the crowd going.  But not as much as Montreal's goal scored by, last year's high scorer, Marty Rucinsky!

Montreal fans grew pretty quiet after that, thanks to two more goals scored by the Leafs.  One, an unexpected goal, scored by Tommas Keberle and the other scored by Sergei Berezin.  Both took place in the third period.

As the buzzard sounded big boy Chris McAllister got into a fight with Turner Stevenson of the Canadiens.  And to finish it all off Cujo was named the 1st star.  Mats the second and Sergei Berezin the third!  The Leafs started their season with a 4-1 win!
