Scouting Report
1997-98 Season
Second NHL season. Third on team
in game-winning goals. Missed two games with groin strain.
The Finesse Game
Modin is still learning the North
American game and is gradually getting more and more ice time. Like Tomas
Holmstrom, he is presenting a new
concept of the Swedish hockey player. He is like the bull in the china
shop. He goes to the net, and that
is how he will score his goals. Modin came here with the reputation of
being a playmaker, but he has a
heavy, cannon shot. He should shoot from everywhere on the ice, even if
he
is standing on the goal line; his
shot has that much on it. He needs to improve his accuracy, but goals started
going in for him later in the season
(he had only three goals by the All-Star break) and he gained more
confidence. He has a bit of a knock-kneed
skating style and isn't very pretty to watch, but his speed is NHL
calibre and he's very strong. Modin
is a cycle player, and won't usually score off the rush. He might not score
on the original shot but he will
score on the first or second rebound.
The Physical Game
Modin has good size and will hit.
He plays his best hockey when he gets physically involved and goes to the
net. He is powerful, and he will
take a lot of abuse in front of the net. Once he gets there you can't budge
him.
The Intangibles
Modin has been called a "Jethro";
big, but very raw and green. He is progressing slowly but steadily and
has
a future as a second-line winger.
He is very well-liked and is coachable.
Projection
Modin has an upside and can play
regularly on a third line for the Leafs. He scored goals in double digits,
which we foresaw for last season,
and now has to push his way over 20 goals.
