Dec 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CP) - Goaltender Robert Luongo is all the rage on Long Island after 43 saves in the New York Islanders' 2-1 road win against the Boston Bruins and 27 more in a 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars.
Felix Potvin, who Luongo supplanted in those
games, understands the game away from the game.
"Good for him," Potvin told the Calgary Sun. "He deserved to start (Tuesday)
after the way he played in Boston."
Luongo's greatness has been taken for granted ever since he was drafted
fourth overall in 1997.
Brett Hull has said the kid reminded him of Ken Dryden.
"I'm not Ken Dryden," pleaded Luongo. "Or Grant Fuhr. Or Martin Brodeur.
Or, or . . . anybody. I haven't proven anything yet."
Luongo is already sparking speculation that the Isles might begin to entertain
trade offers for Potvin, who earns $2.7 million this season.
"That's part of the business I can't control," says Potvin. "There's nothing
I can
do about it. But there are lots of teams in this league who carry two good
goalies."
