The
Finesse Game
King is a checking winger, a role
that can wear on a player night after night, but he brings enthusiasm and
hustle to every shift. He has to
play that way to stay in the NHL, and he knows it. He doesn't possess many
skills. He will generate some scoring
chances with his speed but can't do much with the puck at tempo. He's
more intent on chasing the puck
carrier. He creates turnovers but doesn't do much with the puck when he
gets it. Most of his scoring chances
(and there will not be many of these) will be garbage goals off the scrums
in front of the net. A superb crunch-time
player, whether protecting a lead or needing a big play in overtime,
he'll do his utmost to deliver.
He is a gamer.
The
Physical Game
King knows somebody's got to do
the grunt work, and he's willing and able. He's relentless along the boards
and in the corners, and anyone who
has his back to King or his head down will pay the physical price. King
takes no prisoners and will stand
up for his teammates. He will fight if needed, but his reputation as a
clean,
hard checker is no secret. Whether
or not he wears a letter on his sweater, King carries himself like a captain.
The
Intangibles
King brings sandpaper and leadership
to a team in desperate need of both. Although he is "only" a third-line
winger, the Maple Leafs can use
his character on and off the ice.
Projection
Points will be negligible, but King's
contribution and penalty minutes will be considerable.
