The Calgary Flames chose Jonas in the 10th round (222nd overall)
of the 1992 Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Flames
in 1996-97, when he led league rookies with 189 shots and tied
for first among first year players with a team-leading six
game-winning goals. He also established career-highs with 19
goals, 16 assists, and 35 points. On Jan. 2, 1998, he was traded
with Zarley Zalapski to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for
Valeri Bure. Between the two teams in 1997-98, Jonas played
in a
career-high 78 games. By the end of the season, he played in
his
100th NHL game.
From 1988-96, Jonas scored 85 goals and 54 assists in 224 games
for Farjestad of the Swedish Elite League. In 1995-96, he led
the
league with a career-high 32 goals.
Jonas played for Team Sweden at the World Junior Championships
in 1992. In 1997, Jonas represented Sweden at the World
Championships.
Jonas returns to his native Sweden during the off-season.
1997-98 Season
Aqcuired from Calgary with Zarley Zalapski for Valeri
Bure and future considerations, February 1, 1998.
Second NHL season. Third on team in shots.
The Finesse Game
Hoglund is a natural goal scorer. Every time he gets the
puck he has a chance to score. The trick is to
encourage him to shoot more, and instill an intense drive.
Hoglund lacks a goal scorer's mentality, but he has a
goal scorer's tools. He has a good, hard slap shot and
half-wrister. Hoglund has adapted well to North
American hockey style in his defensive and positional
play. Play along the boards was a new concept to him,
but he was unafraid of getting involved. Hoglund skates
well for a big man. He's no speed skater, but his
skating is NHL calibre.
The Physical Game
Hoglund is a big guy but doesn't play a physical game.
He has a long reach, which he uses instead of his body
to try to win control of the puck or slow down an opponent.
He's getting used to the idea of hitting but has to
get better at it. When he does, his whole game perks up.
The Intangibles
Hoglund seemed a little dazed by a trade in his second
NHL season. He needs to feel comfortable to develop
confidence, but he also needs a fire lit under him.
Projection
Hoglund is a potential 50-goal scorer down the road if
he gets the right personnel to play with and the right
mental approach.
