1997-98 Season
First NHL season. Appeared in 52 games with St. John's (AHL), scoring 3-23--26 with 124 PIM.

   The Finesse Game
Markov is a spirited young player with good skills, though he tries to attempt too much offensively. He is
pretty sound positioning-wise, and he is a good skater. Coaches have to constantly keep him in tune with
what to do defensively. Markov wants to drift more into an offensive game. He is tempted to make high-risk
pinches, and when he gets beat his ice time gets cut. He is just starting to understand that cause-and-effect.
Markov makes a good first pass. Once he gets the puck he is looking to go up-ice for a play, which not all
defensemen do, and a stick-to-stick pass gets him out of trouble.

   The Physical Game
Markov isn't very big but he brings a little edge, and a little chippiness to his game.

   The Intangibles
Markov saw increased playing time with the Leafs in the last third of the season and could become a number
four or five defenseman on a regular basis this year. He has developed quite rapidly and zipped past several
   other Toronto prospects.

   Projection
Markov wants to play like an elite "offenseman," but his skills don't put him in that class. If he plays a smarter
defensive game, he will get a nice chunk of ice time and score 20 to 25 points in what will essentially be his
rookie season (even though officially he hit the 25-game limit last year).
