Scouting Report

   1997-98 Season
Acquired from Washington for Jeff Brown, March 24, 1998. Tied for second on team in plus-minus. Missed
three games with ankle injury. Missed three games with shoulder injury.

   The Finesse Game
Cote is a solid two-way defenseman. He has good puckhandling skills and can make a pass to his forehand
or backhand side with confidence. He overhandles the puck at times, especially in his defensive zone, and
when he gets into trouble he seems to struggle with his forehand clearances off the left-wing boards. Cote can
do everything in stride. Carrying the puck does not slow him down and he can rush end to end. He is gifted in
all of the skating areas--fine agility, good balance, quick stops and starts. He likes to bring the puck up on the
power play. He gets a lot on his shot from the point, which causes rebounds, and it's the source of most of his
assists. Cote has decent hockey sense. He can lead a rush or come into the play as a trailer, but he knows
enough not to force and to play more conservatively when the situation dictates. His skating covers up for
most of his defensive lapses. His instincts lag well behind his skill level. He can be beaten one-on-one but it
takes a good player to do it.

 The Physical Game
Cote doesn't have great size, but he is a solid hitter who finishes his checks. He isn't mean, however, and will
occasionally fall into the trap of playing the puck instead of the man.

   The Intangibles
Because he is such a good skater and an intelligent player, Cote will be able to play at a high level for another
six or seven years. He is one of the top four defensemen on the Leafs.

   Projection
Cote has sufficient skills to score 40 points, though 25 to 30 is his likely range.
